Welshpool darts prodigy Rhys Butler showed the world why our area is so excited by his potential by overcoming a heavy cold to win his group at the weekend’s WDF Youth World Masters in Hungary.

The youngster took the Welshpool and District Darts League by storm last season at the age of just 12, and booked his spot to play against the world’s best teenagers through a qualifying event in Margam, south Wales.

He arrived in Budapest with his dad, Mitch, full of cold, but brushed it aside to win his group with three wins from his three matches.

He almost advanced in the knock-out stages too, but lost 4-2 against a vastly more experienced player.

Rhys then went into the Youth World Open, but lost his first-round match 4-2, despite battling back from 3-0 down and missing a few chances to tie the contest 3-3.

It will be back to domestic darts this week for Rhys who is set for another big season.
