Welshpool delivers once again!

06/06/2024 @ 12:10

It was another glorious morning for the town as Welshpool hosted the Grand Depart for the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Women in front of a large crowd.

Eighty-nine riders, including some of the best in the world, all lined up outside the Town Hall (pictured) for the opening leg of the four-day race which was flagged away by Welshpool county councillor Richard Church, on behalf of Powys County Council.

Other dignitaries, including the Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, were in attendance as scores of school children joined a healthy crowd of well-wishers lining the town centre.

Ahead of the riders was nearly 90 miles of tough riding that will include the mountain roads of Eryri National Park on route to this afternoon’s finish in Llandudno.

The event picks up tomorrow with a start and finish in Wrexham, before a third day based out of Warrington in North West England.

Manchester hosts the start of Day Four on Sunday, before the event will finish in the Lancashire town of Leigh at around 2pm.

Today’s action, including the start in Welshpool, will be shown on ITV4 tonight at 8pm.

Welshpool is no stranger to hosting big sporting events, with the cycling, rallying and running events all starting from the town centre in recent years.
