Welshpool is mourning the death of a popular son this morning after the sad news that Pete ‘Pud’ Davies died suddenly in his Welshpool home on Tuesday night.

Pete, who turned just 50 last month, was well known in the area, and particularly in the sporting community as a popular member of both Welshpool rugby and cricket clubs for a number of years.

Facebook is filled with a wave of tributes to Pete who was described as “a true gentleman”, a “beautiful neighbour” and a “Welshpool legend” among the many comments posted to his page.

Welshpool Rugby Club also paid a touching tribute, announcing: “The club are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Pete ‘Pud’ Davies, someone who gave so much to Welshpool RUFC over the years and selflessly dedicated his time and effort to all of those around him.

“Many of you will have known Pete well. He represented the club for a number of years as a player, before passing on those years of rugby knowledge through coaching the younger generations that have now taken his place on the field. He truly had a heart of gold and was always willing to give his all to those that needed it.

“He loved his rugby and loved Welshpool Rugby Club, proudly sharing his ever-present support for his local team. No doubt you all have your own stories to share of the good times you’ve had with him or the influence he’s had on you.

“A club stalwart, a true gentleman and above all a wonderful friend, he will be greatly missed.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family at this extremely difficult time.”
