Top authors, Hollywood and even a choir for Monty Lit Fest

05/06/2024 @ 10:20

The Monty Lit Fest has fast become established as one of the area’s favourite events, and this weekend’s eclectic line-up appears to literally have something for everyone!

A roll-call of established best-selling authors will be heading to Montgomery for two days of literary debate and discussion, with even a touch of Hollywood featuring MyWelshpool taking centre stage on Sunday.

And to prove that the festival likes a challenge, a new book about some of the best Welsh hymns will be supported by a performance from the Penybontfawr Male Voice Choir!

It’s just one of over 20 events that will take place over the weekend, starting on Friday, when writing from Wales, the Borders and beyond will be celebrated with a stellar line-up of literary talent.

The Festival tells us what to expect:

Will you join us for the Festival finale when you can hear M Wynn Thomas talk about those top-12 Welsh hymns, listen to the choir sing some of them – and have the chance to join in too?

Or do you fancy hearing the inside story of Wrexham FC’s Hollywood-inspired renaissance – a perfect accompaniment to the TV series, when an award-winning book’s author will be quizzed on stage by MyWelshpool’s David Williams.

Would you like to meet top fiction authors Tim Pears, Siân Hughes, Myfanwy Alexander and Chris Lloyd?

Or get spooked as Delyth Badder tells us all about Wales’s wealth of ghost stories?

These are just some of the highlights of a programme that features everything from top fiction to the Tudors; rock music to Wrexham FC; folklore to farming and nature.

You might want to hone your writing skills at one of our writers’ workshops; relive the 1990s and Cool Cymru at our Late Lounge or exercise your grey cells at our Saturday Night Big Quiz.

As always, local authors and topics of local interest will be much in evidence, whether we’re celebrating which 100 objects can give us a history of the countryside; debating the future of farming or finding out more about Gwrych Castle’s World War II secrets.

Make a day or weekend of it in the historic town of Montgomery, with a whole host of free community events including an exhibition of arts and crafts from local artists; children’s storytelling; street food and music and everything else that Montgomery has to offer.

Festival Co-Chair, Sarah Corser, said: “We can’t wait to get going with this year’s Festival. We’ll be welcoming to Montgomery another fine array of literary talent with a programme that has something for everyone.

“Whether you’re an avid reader, an aspiring writer or have never been to a literary festival before, the whole community is ready to give everyone a friendly welcome for what promises to be a very special weekend.”

The festival’s main venue will be Montgomery Town Hall, with other local venues in the town playing a supporting role.

Festival goers will be able to meet the authors and have their books signed. They’ll be able to buy books from not one, but two, bookshops: a pop-up Festival shop run by Oswestry’s Booka, as well as Montgomery’s own Montgomery Bookshop.
