Welshpool have their first home game of the season this weekend when they entertain Bangor in WRU Division Two North, writes Gary Williams.
After picking up six points in two games so far, both away, the Maesydre men will be looking to confirm that they will be up amongst the front runners this season after a tough campaign last year.
Opponents Bangor, promoted from Division Three last season, have played three, winning one. Historically they have always been a tough nut to crack in games against Pool. However, confidence will be high for the hosts after their last minute of the game victory at Rhyl and home advantage is likely to be a big factor.
It was sad to hear that Machynlleth have withdrawn from this division due to lack of players. Unfortunately, this now leaves just nine teams which means quite a few blank Saturdays for all the clubs.
In Division One, Newtown will be looking to pick up their first win of the season against a Bethesda side that they ran very close last weekend (40-36) in the WRU Cup. It’s fair to say that, despite their results to date, Newtown’s battling performances have certainly raised a few eyebrows. Home advantage could again prove crucial.
Also in Division One, COBRA, having won two out of three this season, travel to Llandudno and take on a side who seem to be in disarray, having lost their first three games. Form suggests a COBRA win but it will all depend on who Llandudno put on the field, at full strength they are still a formidable outfit at home.
In Division Three North East there is an exciting Mid Wales derby in store as Newtown’s 2nd team take on COBRA’s. Both teams have played two games and won two and they sit in second and third positions. Difficult to predict.
Llanidloes, also in this Division, will be desperate to kick start their season, having lost both their opening games. Visitors Denbigh have picked up a win and a loss so far. Llani will need to be at full strength if they are to have a chance of getting that elusive first win.
On Sunday, there is another Mid Wales derby as COBRA Ladies entertain Llanidloes Ladies. Machynlleth Ladies travel to Wrexham Ladies.
