Players, fans, parents and members of the public are being invited to support Welshpool Town Football Club’s Volunteer Day this Sunday at the Wayne Evans Playing Fields from 1.30pm.
The new playing fields have miraculously recovered from the summer weather during which they resembled a desert more than football pitches. But they have been seeded, fertilised and cut ready for the months ahead.
But there is still plenty of work to be done surrounding the pitches – so the call for volunteers has gone out to carry out the following:
· Clean the entrance area.
· Clear areas around bins – making doors at the back accessible.
· Paint lids on bins.
· Remove weeds and clear areas in front of container doors.
· Clear areas around benches. Clean benches if necessary.
· Clear away scrubs from old cattle water trough – make it visible as part of the canal heritage.
· Create footpaths through the meadows.
· Create beds and scatter wildflower seeds.
· Clear the entrance from canal path.
· Remove thistles and nettles from the sides of the pitches.
· Litter picking
“Although we have some relevant equipment including two strimmers and two hedge cutters, please bring your own if you have as well as gloves, secateurs and other garden cutters,” said club secretary, Eva Bredsdorff.
“If you are bringing any children under 16, please be aware of the machinery and the type of work that is going on. The club cannot take responsibility for the children’s safety.”
She added that if it rains the day will be postponed.
