Rally organisers hope for town centre return

Organisers of an event that brings tens of thousands of pounds into the town and surrounding area say they face a financial hurdle if they are to bring it back to the town centre next March.

The Get Jerky Rally North Wales is a part of the 2025 Welsh Championship and returned to Welshpool two years back, but last year it was based out at the Livestock Market.

Organisers are keen to return to the town centre on March 29 after huge crowds supported it there two years ago, but it comes at a cost with crowd control equipment required and payment for a road closure.

At the latest Welshpool Town Council Events and Tourism Committee, events co-ordinator, Kimberly Wright, said that they had been approached to support efforts for a town centre return.

“They have approached us for help so Cllr Alison Davies is meeting with Powys County Council to discuss what can be done,” said Ms Wright.

Cllr Megan Bailey suggested that councillors could volunteer on the day to cut the cost of road closure management after stressing: “The event brings a lot of business into the town centre.”

Ms Wright also said that organisers may look at a gala dinner event on St David’s Day in the town to raise funds.

The committee agreed that they would support the rally organisers in principal, but would not be able to provide financial support.
