Welshpool head North looking to consolidate top position

19/10/2024 @ 09:21

Unbeaten Welshpool travel to Abergele this weekend in Division Two North, hoping they can continue their unbeaten start to the season, writes Gary Williams.

Despite their poor start, Abergele is always a tough place to go and Pool know that they will have to keep up the momentum from their sizzling start if they wish to pick up the points.

Head coach, Daley Jones, said: “Our plan is to make the Maesydre a fortress and pick up as many away wins as possible if we are to challenge for promotion. I can't have asked for a better start from the boys this season, but we need to keep it going. Gele's sluggish start to the season doesn't mean a thing, it all comes down to eighty minutes this Saturday afternoon and we're as ready as we can be for it.”

Elsewhere in Division Two, Machynlleth host Teirw Nant whilst Newtown have a Saturday off due to the odd number of teams in the Division.

In Division One, COBRA, sitting just below halfway in the table, host Denbigh who have had an encouraging start to the campaign after promotion at the end of last season. Home advantage could play a significant part in the outcome of this fixture, it will be close but the Meifod men will be looking to come out on top and pick up valuable league points.

COBRA's 2nd XV, due to play Denbigh 2nds in Divison 3 North East, were disappointed to find their game called off due to the visitors being unable to field a side. In the same Division, unbeaten Llanidloes, also find themselves without a game to their also being an odd number of teams in this Division.

It's a sad weekend for rugby in Mid Wales this week with the funeral of Dai Powell, life-long stalwart at Trefyclawdd RFC and in latter years Chairman of the Mid Wales District Rugby Union. I am sure that the whole rugby family will join me in extending sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dai.
