Ieuan Griffiths hit one of the all-time great Shropshire League innings as Montgomery picked up a big Division Two win to stay in with an outside chance of promotion.

Griffiths (pictured by Phil Blagg) hit a majestic 176, including six sixes, as Monty amassed a whopping 330-4 at home to Wellington III. Aaron Ruff-Cock (52no) and Sam Williams (47) also chipped in.

Wellington held out for 168-9 with three wickets apiece for Alex Bromley and Ed Bennett.

Newtown collapsed to 82 all out to put their Division One title celebrations on ice.

It started well, with David Laird (4-26), Tom Anderson (3-20) and Marco Malan (2-21) dismissing Newport for 149, but the reply collapsed with only Laird’s 38 putting up any kind of resistance.

But Newtown are still top, and could clinch the title this Saturday.

Welshpool’s promotion hopes were hit by defeat at Church Aston who batted first for 154 all out. Rob Anderson took 4-37. In reply, Welshpool were dismissed for 139 with Charlie Kinsey (33) top scoring.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio returned from St George’s II with full points after bowling out their hosts for just 106. Dave Jones returned his best figures for the club with 6-39.

Duncan Todd (33no) and Martin Owen (23no) then partnered up to guide the Guils through to a fine-wicket win.

Centuries for Danny Foulkes (100no) and Mike Bellamore (104) steered Newtown II towards a massive 249-run victory at Hodnet & Peplow to step closer to promotion from Division Four.

The pair helped Newtown to 283-3 declared, before Cai Van Lill (5-25) and Harry Aldridge (4-6) dismissed the hosts for just 34.

A brilliant all-round performance from Adrian Foulkes gave Llanidloes a big win at Shrewsbury III who were bowled out for just 12, chasing Llani’s 248. Foulkes made 43 not out and then took 6-5 to make short work of Shrewsbury’s batting.

There were defeats for Welshpool II and Montgomery II in Division Six, but Guilsfield & Llandrinio II continue to finish strongly in Division Seven with a six-wicket win against Chirk II at the LHG Oval.

Chirk were bowled out for 134, before Garry Foster (34) top scored in the Guils reply.
