Televised rugby first for Welshpool on Wednesday

12/12/2023 @ 09:31

The cameras will be rolling at Welshpool Rugby Club tomorrow night (Wednesday) when the makers of a new programme starring former Wales and British Lions legend Scott Quinnell continue their series.

The S4C cameras will be filming at the club for the new six-part series created by Whisper Cymru called O’r Stryd i’r Sgrym (From Street to Scrum), and the public are invited to attend for free.

Quinnell has created a new rugby team for the series, which will take on Oswestry Rugby Club in a T1 game, a non-contact format which can be played by all ages and abilities.

It will be first time that a game of mixed T1 rugby will have been filmed since the version was launched by World Rugby.

The game will be 20 minutes, with 10 mins played each way and the kick-off is at 6pm.

“This is fantastic for not only Welshpool and the local community, but for all of Mid Wales to have the opportunity to host this brand of inclusive rugby series headed by Whisper and S4C,” said Welshpool Chair, Kevin Williams.

“I would like to thank all of the volunteers at Welshpool Rugby Club that have made this event possible and to Whisper for their support. We look forward to seeing a good crowd down at the club on Wednesday!”

The friendly match is part of the new team’s training schedule, which is being coached by Quinnell and other high-profile ex-internationals, including former Wales ladies captain Siwan Lillicrap. The team is supported by the Welsh Rugby Union and the charity, School of Hard Knocks.

The team will go on to play their final match on February 10, when they will face an English team. This will coincide with the Six Nations fixture of Wales v England.
