Welshpool asked: where do you want money spent next year?

12/10/2026 @ 10:21

Welshpool Town Council is inviting residents to have their say on some of the choices facing the Council as it prepares its budget for 2027/28.

The Council has developed a new interactive budget exercise which allows residents to explore some of the decisions being considered and see how their choices would affect the amount the Council needs to raise through Council Tax.

The exercise starts with the Council’s underlying draft budget and includes choices about existing services, potential savings, additional activities and ways of generating more income.

Residents will be able to consider areas including playparks, Christmas lights, parking, town centre maintenance, events and the Tour de France, as well as possible changes to some Council charges and income.

The consultation follows the Council’s earlier work to develop its Interim Strategic Plan. Feedback from residents helped shape the Council’s priorities and work programme, and the budget consultation is intended to help inform how those ambitions are funded and delivered.

Cllr Morag Bailey, Chair of Welshpool Town Council’s Finance & Governance Committee, said: “We want residents to have a meaningful opportunity to be involved as we prepare next year’s budget. This exercise does more than simply ask whether people want Council Tax to go up or down. It shows some of the choices we face and the financial effect of making them.

“We have already listened to residents in developing our Strategic Plan last year. This is the next part of that conversation – looking at how we use the resources available to us and where people think we should spend, save or generate additional income.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to take part. The results will give Councillors valuable information when we consider the final budget.”

The consultation will remain open until 12 noon on Tuesday, November 3.
