There’s an impressive birthday being celebrated in Welshpool this month, with the 1st Clive’s Own Welshpool Scout Group set to turn 100!
The scouting movement began in 1907 when a youth organisation established a group on Brownsea Island, Dorset, but it has since become a global movement with a membership of approximately 25 million.
On December 19, 1924, that organisation established a group in Welshpool, which continues to thrive to this day, providing young people with the life skills and know-how that they could otherwise have missed out on.
The group will be celebrating its centenary on the same day (19th), this month, and is inviting scouts of the past to join them for a memorable evening from 4pm-7pm, the first of a number of events to mark the anniversary year.
“All members, former members and, indeed, anyone who is interested is invited to join us at the Scout HQ, COWSHACC (Clive’s Own Welshpool Scout Headquarters And Community Centre),” said spokesperson Farrell McManus.
“Complimentary refreshments by way of soft drinks, mulled wine and mince pies will be on offer and we will have a number of items from our archives on display.
“In particular, we have a number of photographs, full of smiling, neckerchiefed, anonymous faces, so we would very much appreciate seeing former group members come along and identify themselves and others. This will greatly help us in developing an online archive. If you have any such memorabilia yourselves, we would love to see it.”
