Newtown Hospital's League of Friends holds last meeting

Newtown Hospital's League of Friends has held its last meeting after failing to attract new members.

Powys Teaching Health Board has paid tribute to the volunteers, recognising nearly five decades of fundraising and support.

Last week, Newtown Hospital held a special ceremony to honour the LOF’s contributions. 

Dr. Carl Cooper, Chair of the Powys Teaching Health Board, said: “For almost 50 years, you and your colleagues have served the hospital and the Newtown community diligently. Not only have you raised significant funds to benefit patients and staff, but you have also acted as a vital bridge between the hospital, the health board, and local residents.”

Despite attempts to recruit new members, the LOF decided to disband due to a shortage of volunteers. Peris Astley, Chair of the LOF, explained that he and Secretary Joy Williams have been with the group for 49 years but faced challenges in attracting new supporters.

Since 2017, the League of Friends has raised £120,352 for hospital equipment, impacting patient care in Newtown. As the LOF winds down, it is working with the Powys Health Charity to manage its remaining funds to continue supporting the wellbeing of patients, staff, and local communities under the umbrella of Powys Teaching Health Board.

A statement said: "This marks the end of the Newtown Hospital League of Friends era, whose dedication has played a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare services for the local community."
