Work underway on ‘Pont Potter/Potter’s Bridge’

Scaffolding has gone up around the bridge that has been subject of a long-running battle for funding to make it safe.

Cllr Nick Howells made it one of his priorities during his time as Mayor to sort the canal bridge, which was in danger of being condemned and closed due to its sad state.

There were issues over ownership, with no record actually showing who was responsible, but Cllr Howells’ call for help from local businesses was answered by James Potter who coughed up the lion’s share of the £12,000 in anticipated costs.

Powys County Council also contributed £2,000 as it would impact their active travel plans for the town, with Cllr Richard Church last night stating it should be finished by the time schools go back in September.

Meanwhile, there have been calls to officially name the bridge after Mr Potter, an offer that has been put to the businessman by Cllr Howells.
