Welshpool drug raids net £450k in cannabis plants

Police officers hope they have smashed a “sophisticated” drugs operation based out of two empty buildings in Welshpool Town Centre.

Raids were carried out at the former Savers and County Times buildings this week, with two arrests made and approximately 580 cannabis plants discovered, valued at around £450,000.

Two men were arrested and Alban Qemalli, 31, will appear at Wrexham Magistrates Court today (September 4), charged with cultivating cannabis.

A second man, aged 27, has been arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and remains in police custody.

Police say both were sophisticated set-ups with a number of large knives, electronic devices, plants and associated growing equipment recovered.

Detective Sergeant Lovatt said: “This was a very successful operation, which saw excellent joint working between a number of departments within Dyfed-Powys Police.

“We are committed to making our force area hostile to those who deal illegal drugs, and our work over the two days has seen a significant amount of cannabis taken out of the supply chain."

Earlier this year, officers discovered similar drug farms at the former HSBC building and, again, at the former Ciounty Times HQ.
