Fifteen-year-old Holli Smallman, from Welshpool, has been named as the tragic victim of the River Severn incident on Friday night on the town’s outskirts.

Dyfed-Powys Police released the name this afternoon and there has been reaction from the high school, where she attended, as well as the Town Mayor as the town united in grief.

“Dyfed-Powys Police can confirm that the teenager recovered from the River Severn, Welshpool, was 15-year-old Holli Smallman from Welshpool.

“A multi-agency search was conducted at the river on Friday, August 9. Specialist officers are supporting the family and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.”

Welshpool High School Headteacher, Jon Arnold, said that he was “absolutely devastated” but stressed that he is working with colleagues to set up a support system for pupils and staff.

He also underlined the police’s message that the family’s privacy be respected during this harrowing time.

Meanwhile, the Town Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, described it as a “terrible tragedy” that had been felt by the whole area, not just the town.

“It is with immense sadness that I learn of the terrible tragedy in the River Severn on Friday. I speak for the whole council when I say that our thoughts are very much with this young person’s family.

“Events such as this affect the whole town deeply and I know that many will be sharing a sense of shock.”
