Hafren Dyfrdwy: Help us to avoid a hose pipe ban

As parts of Wales are in the midst of a hose pipe ban and water companies in England introduce measures tomorrow (Thursday), our local water company said we can all work together to avoid a potential ban.

Welsh Water introduced a hose pipe ban at the weekend for parts of West Wales, and Thames Water has joined other English providers in introducing a ban this coming weekend, meaning around 23 million people are covered.

It follows a hat-trick of heatwaves over the past couple of months and the likelihood that the dry spell will continue, despite the chance of showers this weekend.

Locally, Hafren Dyfrdwy said it was monitoring the situation but hopes that our readers will work with them in managing usage sensible to avoind any restrictions.

A Hafren Dyfrdwy spokesperson told us this afternoon: “We’re seeing extremely high demand for water, as people are using more water and for much longer throughout the day than usual.

“Our teams are working around the clock, treating more water, moving supplies across the region where it’s needed and fixing and finding leaks quicker, but we need customers’ help too. With the prolonged dry weather ongoing, we would urge customers to help protect supplies by using water mindfully.

“Small changes made by lots of people can have a huge impact. For example, use a watering can instead of a sprinkler, as they use about 1,000 litres an hour, equivalent to the water one person would use in a week.

“Even with the cooler weather it’s good to be mindful about use indoors, things like only turning your dishwasher or washing machine on when they’re full helps.

“There are no restrictions in place in the Hafren Dyfrdwy region and by using water wisely now, customers can help us keep taps flowing and avoid the need for further measures if the hot and dry weather continues.”
