Murder investigation police urge people ‘not to share’ CCTV footage

29/06/2026 @ 02:39

Police investigating Sunday morning’s Welshpool tragedy which left a 49-year-old man dead in the town centre have urged people not to share CCTV footage apparently showing the incident that has already been widely circulated.

A murder investigation is ongoing and a 22-year-old man has been arrested after police were called to the scene outside the kebab house on Church Street at around 1.16am.

Sadly, and despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

But CCTV has since been shared through social media channels and a police spokesperson has urged people “not to share out of respect for the family and the integrity of the investigation”.

Powys commander, Superintendent Gareth Grant said: “Not only is this a live investigation, which could be compromised if potential evidential material is being shared, but there is a grieving family at the heart of our enquiries, who we ask the public to respect.

“They are going through an unimaginable time, and the last thing they would want is for their loved one’s final moments to be passed around as some kind of entertainment.

“I can assure the community of Welshpool that our CID and major crime team are progressing the investigation, following all lines of enquiry available to them.

“I would like to thank the members of the public who have come forward with information to assist us, and ask those who might have information that could help the investigation to submit this through the dedicated web page set up for the operation.

“Additional police patrols will be carried out in the town centre over the coming days, and these officers will be available to anyone with concerns.”

Meanwhile, an appeal for information was issued overnight and can be provided in the following ways:
