28/08/2024 @ 09:28

The life of former Montgomeryshire MP Delwyn Williams will be celebrated in his native Guilsfield following his funeral on September 11, it has been confirmed.

Mr Williams, who passed away last week at the age of 85, will be best remembered for shaking up the local political landscape in 1979 by ending decades of Liberal domination and winning the General Election as a Conservative.

He ousted Emlyn Hooson by a majority of 1,593, but then lost the seat by 668 votes at the 1983 election to another Liberal, Alex Carlile.

In a statement last night, the family stated: “David John Delwyn Williams “Delwyn” of Guilsfield passed away peacefully at Severn Hospice on August 22 aged 85.

“Beloved husband and constant companion of Olive.

“Much loved father of Paul and Sally and father-in-law of Caroline. Loving Grandfather of Phoebe.

“Delwyn will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.”

It went on to confirm that the funeral service will be held at Emstrey Crematorium, Shrewsbury, on Wednesday, September 11, at 1.15pm, followed by a celebration of his life at the Kings Head, Guilsfield. Donations given in memory will be gratefully received for Cancer Research UK and Severn Hospice.
