Mayor’s caution over growth of Welshpool pub scene

26/10/2023 @ 10:07

The Mayor of Welshpool is concerned that the town’s revitalised pub scene may result in not enough punters to keep them all going.

With the Owl & The Pussycat recently opened and the Pinewood set to re-open next year, Cllr Nick Howells was cautious at last night’s Planning Meeting which discussed plans to radically expand The Angel on Berriew Street.

Councillors were told that the pub has purchased the former Harrison’s building next door and wants to extend into it, creating a larger bar and restaurant with six flats created upstairs. The request last night was to change the use of the building into a ‘drinking establishment with food provision’.

Whilst the plans were largely supported by the committee, with some notes to do with energy efficiency and noise pollution, Cllr Howells said: “I am really glad to see another empty building come back into use and not derelict on one of the main streets. But we have just, thankfully, seen the Owl & The Pussycat come back; The Pinewood is being done up; I have heard, but don’t know if it is true, that a local businessman has bought the former Con Club, and now we have got these plans for The Angel.

“For a small town with a limited amount of people with a limited amount of money, all it is going to do is spread the people out. Because we are not suddenly going to get this huge influx of people to come to the Angel. But that’s just my opinion.”

The committee’s comments will be fed into the planning mix with Powys County Council set to make the final decision.
