Welshpool, twinned with Welshpool?

Welshpool could be twinned with a namesake from across the Atlantic, with town councillors set to discuss forging ties at a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) night.

For many years, travellers from the area have visited Welshpool in West Australia but very little is known about another Welshpool on the Nova Scotia coast of Canada.

However, all that is set to change after a local artist contacted a town councillor to make them aware of a potential opportunity to build links.

In tomorrow’s Events Meeting for the Town Council, councillors will be told that: “A local artist has informed Councillor Ben Gwalchmai about another Welshpool in Nova Scotia, where they hold the Campobello Festival.
“The idea is to connect the two towns (and Linda, the local artist who has looked into the history) through an exchange and build tourist links.”

Back in 2015, plans to twin with another Canadian town, Simcoe, were dropped due to a lack of interest despite links between the two towns at the time through the Rotary youth programme.

What’s on in Welshpool, Nova Scotia?

The area is home to the Campobello Fogfest, a free festival held every August celebrating local music, art, heritage, and culture since 2013. It has grown into a popular five-day festival.

Like it’s Welsh namesake, Welshpool prides itself on being a base for adventure and fun, with whale watching among the favourite activities promoted.
