A fund set up in memory of Mick Bates has awarded its first grants to community groups that work to benefit the people of Montgomeryshire, but particularly Llanfair Caereinion and the Banwy Valley.

The Mick Bates Community Memorial Fund was set up by his family following the former politician’s death to bone cancer in August last year.

A year on and over £10,000 has been raised and a grant scheme set up with the following groups successfully applying for an award up to £1,000:

Llanfair Caereinion Bowling Club £1,000

To undertake refurbishment work of the club house, including purchasing new tables that will help improve the facility for its users and the wider community.

New Life Church, Llanfair Caereinion £1,000

Provide children from some of the most deprived backgrounds with an opportunity to experience an activity holiday, which will give a variety of experiences as well as increase their confidence, self-esteem, resilience and independence.  

Llanfair United Football Club £600

To fund new equipment to support the growth and expansion of the grassroot football club. The equipment will support the 86 young people who are registered with the club, and will be utilised by them in their training and football festivals.

Caffi Cymunedol Llanfair Caereinion £600

To support the marketing and running costs of the newly established community café at The Institute by giving the community a safe place to come together to socialise, combat rural isolation and enhance wellbeing and volunteering.

Cylch Meithrin a Ti a Fi Dyffryn Banw £300

To fund a workshop with internationally acclaimed artist Eleri Mills to work with children of Cylch Meithrin and Ti and Fi to create art work inspired by the landscape of the Banwy Valley.

Ruth Bates, Mick’s daughter and a Trustee of the Charity, said: “We received lots of excellent applications. I know Mick would be so pleased the fund is being utilised to bring people together, and benefit the people of Montgomeryshire and especially his home town of Llanfair Caereinion and the Banwy Valley. We thank all the groups that applied and look forward to seeing the successful projects being put into action.”

In addition to the grants awarded, the fund has also donated the following over the course of the year: 

£2,000 to The Institute, Llanfair Caereinion for refurbishment work including improving the lightings in the main hall and upgrading the kitchen in the Youth Room.

£2,500 to Ffrindiau Ysgol Bro Caereinion Friends to purchase reusable cups to reduce waste at events and to improve the outside area at the school for the benefit of all pupils.

£500 to Cancer Research (Llanfair Caereinion Branch) and £400 to the Llanfair Caereinion Appeal Fund for the Urdd Maldwyn 2024.

The fund is managed by the Trustees which include Ruth Bates, Cllr Gareth Jones, Nic Davies, Betsan Llwyd, Cerys Metcalf and Cadvan Evans. PAVO administer the fund on behalf of the Trustees.

The fund is a registered charity and has been set up to support the things that Mick was most passionate about which include supporting young people to reach their potential, the environment, helping those most in need and community development and citizenship. 

Cadvan Evans, Chair of The Mick Bates Community Memorial Trust Fund said: “The Mick Bates Community Memorial Fund helps to keep Mick’s legacy alive and fund the things he cared about most– young people, the environment, helping those most in need and communities.”  

Mick was elected as our Liberal Democrat member for Montgomeryshire in the inaugural Welsh Assembly elections in 1999 and continued to serve until 2011.
