Air Ambulance review just weeks away

The High Court is set to review a controversial and hugely unpopular decision to close Welshpool’s lifesaving Wales Air Ambulance base next year.

Lead campaigners, including Russell George MS, Welshpool County Councillor Graham Breeze and Plaid Cymru’s MyWelshpool columnist Elwyn Vaughan, have all take to social media over the weekend to insist that “the campaign to save our Air Ambulance base very much continues”.

In short, the charity’s wish to close their Welshpool and Caernarfon bases in favour of a centralised one in north east Wales was approved by a majority of the Welsh health boards last year.

But campaigners have consistently highlighted the flaws in the data provided and have thrown one last throw of the dice, a judicial review, with the lives and well-being of Montgomeryshire people and visitors on the line.

That was approved by the High Court last October, opening the door for a full and independent legal review into the process, expected to take place at the end of the month.

“The application challenges the lawfulness of the decision that would see the permanent closure of Air Ambulance base in Welshpool,” said Montgoemryshire Member of the Senedd, Mt George.

“In October, the High Court granted permission for a full case to proceed to a hearing, indicating that the judge agreed the case is arguable. This was very welcome news. The hearing is scheduled to take place later this month, the judge will then take some time to consider the issue before making their decision.

“Over the years, countless people have benefited from this life-saving service and have generously donated to and fundraised for it. The campaign to save our Air Ambulance base very much continues.”
