Organisers of the Llanfyllin Music Festival returns have confirmed a line-up of top quality acts for the July event.
There will be four marvellous concerts this year, amid the superb acoustics of St Myllin’s Church:
Wind Quintet | Friday 5 July 2024
The Ensemble Renard (pictured) wind quintet returns, following two previous successes at Llanfyllin. This go-ahead young group will be playing at the Aldeburgh Festival in June as Britten Pears Young Artists before coming on to Wales. Their programme will include Mozart’s Andante and Anton Reicha’s Wind Quintet (Op. 921 No. 5). Reicha’s quintets were an instant success when premiered in Paris in the early 19th century and are reminiscent of Mozart. Find out more about the Ensemble Renard https://ensemblerenard.co.uk/
Harp Recital | Sunday 7 July 2024
Harpist Ieuan Jones grew up locally and has an internationally reputation for his scintillating performances. For this performance, he teams up with his former pupil, Alis Huws, who now enjoys her own stellar career. She is the Official Royal Harpist and played at the coronation of King Charles. String Quartets | Friday 12 and Saturday 13 July 2024
String quartets have traditionally been the mainstay of the Festival programme. Last year, we hosted the inaugural concert of the New Allegri Quartet, formed by Rafael Todes of the original Allegri Quartet. These acclaimed musicians return under a different name: the Creswick Quartet, named for their first violinist, Bradley Creswick. His illustrious career has included playing as Leader of the Royal Opera House Orchestra and the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Friday’s concert features Purcell’s Chacony, Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 (Death and the Maiden). On Saturday, we will hear Haydn’s String Quartet in D major (Op. 76 No. 5), Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 (Op. 13), and finally Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, featuring an additional guest cellist.
