Primary School handed Platinum Eco Award
Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging 19.5 million children across 70 countries, making it the largest educational programme on the planet.
The programme was developed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in 1994 and run in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy.
It is designed to empower and inspire young people to make positive environmental changes to their school and wider community, while building on their skills, including numeracy and literacy, and encompassing Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship.
In order to achieve Platinum status, the school’s Eco Committee have been busy carrying out a number of tasks, but were commended for their work in insulating the school hall with sound insulation boards.
The committee completed a research project to find out what impact the noise was having, collecting data to justify their final decision of insulating the multi-use space.
Eco School Officer, Laura Haig, commented: “Overall, I was really impressed by the quality of work that has come from the Eco-Committee at Ysgol Carreghofa and commend the continued commitment to environmental education.
“I really enjoyed reading through the slides that the eco-committee have put together to outline the sound insulation project that they’ve been working on.
“I thought the project itself was really imaginative. It is clear in the case study that pupils followed the seven step Eco-School process to investigate and implement this action. It is also clear that the pupils have led on executing this, from showing the builders around, to planning the route outside and where to eat lunch whilst the builders were there.”
The Eco Committee are now working on their next project, improving the outdoor area, planting new plants and tidying up the wild area.
