Guilsfield, Welshpool into top three

01/07/2026 @ 11:21

Guilsfield & Llandrinio and Welshpool are the form sides in Shropshire Division Three after moving up to second and third respectively following victories at the weekend.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio picked up a 31-run victory at Shifnal IIIs thanks largely to decent knocks from Gary Meredith (72), Andy Flann (47) and Dave Williams (43) as they posted 239 all out.

The bowlers toiled in the Shropshire heat but the hosts batted out for 208-6 with debutant Abilash Paulose (3-20) the pick of the bowlers.

The win puts the villagers level on points with Welshpool who returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory at previous leaders Wellington III.

Charlie Kinsey (3-31) and Sam Cadwallader (3-17) ploughed through the host's batting which collapsed to 113 all out, no problems for Pool who secured a five-wicket win with Cadwallader (34) and Dan Cadwallader (32no) leading the way.

Both teams are now seven points behind new pace-setters Condover as the season hits half way this weekend.

Newtown’s struggles continued in the Premier League as they dropped to the bottom of the table following defeat at Wem, who had few hiccups hunting down Newtown’s 140 all out for a six-wicket win. It could have been a lot worse had Rhys Jones not made 75 for Newtown.

Rob Bennet hit a brilliant 106 to guide Montgomery through to 267-8 at Wellington II, but it wasn’t enough as the hosts secured a dramatic last ball win in Division One. Andrew Roscow was run out on 45 to add more runs as Monty looked to be in a good position at tea.

But Wellington stuck to the task well in reply, getting across the line at the death with just two wickets remaining. Ieuan Griffiths took three wickets, but the defeat leaves Monty rooted to the bottom of the table.

Newtown II extended their lead at the top of Division Four by winning and seeing closest rivals Llanidloes slip-up.

Mike Bellamore hit a majestic unbeaten 122 as Newtown posted 213-9, well out of reach for Church Stretton who were dismissed for just 118. Bellamore also led the way with the ball, taking three wickets.

Llanidloes fell short chasing Allscott Heath’s 248-6, despite Rhys Jones batting well for his 83.

Jake Evans took 3-27 and Will Gannon hit 41 as Welshpool II cemented their mid-table Division Five place with a victory over Madeley II.

Lewis Todd hit 49, but it was enough as Guilsfield & Llandrinio II fell to defeat at home to Much Wenlock. The villagers set a first innings target of 158, but the visitors motored to victory in the 20th over.

It was a day to forget too for Montgomery II who suffered a five-wicket defeat at home to Wellington IV, also in Division Five.

On Sunday, Newtown III saw their comfortable mid-table spot in Division Three strengthened with a victory at Bridgnorth.

Keane Marks took 3-25 as Newtown were set a target of 200-6 to chase by Bridgnorth III. Russell Powell (98 not out) led the way to a win with four wickets lost.

Callum Jones (48) top scored as Llanidloes II piled up 233 runs at home to Madeley IV who were restricted to 177-9 from their 40 overs.
