Tough 2025 opener for Welshpool

03/01/2025 @ 04:03

Welshpool, starting the new year in top spot in Division 2 North, face what may be their toughest game of the second half of the season, away to Colwyn Bay, writes Gary Williams.

The Bay ran Pool close at the Maesydre early in the season, losing by 24-17, so will be all out for revenge.

This game is being played at Stadiwm CSM (home of RGC) with a 12.15pm kick-off, followed by RGC v Ebbw Vale at 3pm.

Welshpool head coach, Daley Jones, stated: “What a toughie to start 2025. We know we’re going to have to be at our best to get a result up north, but the boys look in good shape and we’re ready for the challenge.

“It is exciting for the team to be playing at the stadium and I’m sure that they’ll rise to the occasion and produce a great performance.”

Elsewhere in Division 2, Newtown travel to bottom club Caernarfon 2nds hoping to start the new year with a valuable win to climb up the table.

Machynlleth also travel north as they head to Rhyl and District. Mach have won their last two league games with impressive displays against Colwyn Bay and Dolgellau and, if they travel with a full-strength squad, could cause an upset at the seaside.

In Division One North, COBRA, in the lower half of the table with 18 points, entertain Mold who sit two places below with 15 points. Definitely a must-win for the Meifod boys to free themselves from a potential relegation battle, but unpredictable Mold are capable of turning in a good performance. Too difficult to call although home advantage might just swing it for COBRA.

Llanidloes, unbeaten leaders of Division Three North East, travel to Dinbych 2nds who currently sit bottom of the table without a win. Llani will expect to extend their lead at the top of the table and put distance between themselves and Wrexham 2nds and COBRA 2nds, in second and third position respectively. However, COBRA 2nds entertain lowly Rhos and should get maximum points to keep up the pressure.
