Early title contenders shine

The Kings Head A have gone to the top of the Welshpool and District Darts League sponsored by The New Saints FC after another great weekend of action, writes Steve Lloyd.

The Kings Head A moved to 12 points after beating Red Lion Llanfair 6-1. Tom Evans was the only winner for the Red Lion A, but Clive Jones hit a 17-dart 501 in his games. Dave Rix (112 out shot), Darren Hyland, Oscar Hyland and Mark Emberton were winners for the Kings who also took both the doubles matches.

Close in second on 11 points are the Green Dragon A who followed up last week’s 6-1 win with a fine 5-2 win against the Green Dragon C. Mitch Butler (13-dart 501), Rhys Butler (16 and 17-dart 501, plus a 180), Den Williams and Robin Shingler all won for the Dragon A. The impressive Matt Knight won for the Dragon C, with the doubles shared.

The Compass are one point behind with 10 points after their second game taking another 5-2 win, this time at the Westwood B. Ben Davies and Jordan Harding winning the only points for the Westwood B, but Carl Dockerty hitting a 180.

The Westwood A bounced back from last week’s heavy defeat to record a 6-1 win at the Grapes A with John Gibbs, Steve Lloyd, Gareth Ashley and Duncan Cork winning for the Westwood A. Josh Langford was the only winner for the Grapes A. The Westwood taking the doubles.

The Punchbowl edged out a 4-3 victory at home to the Oak with Chris Jay, Mike Hall and Liam Astley winning for the Punchbowl, and Hywel Lloyd and Aled Jones winning for the Oak. The doubles were shared.

The second division sees four teams sharing top spot on eight points.

The Grapes B setting the early pace with a 5-2 win at Castle with Stephen Allsobrook and John Lewis winning for the Castle who stay equal top.

Powis Arms, who pipped the Kings Head B (7 points), 4-3, are also top. Graham Pierce, Sam Evans and Harry Jones won the Powis singles, with the Doubles shared.

On seven points are The Lion Caerhowel who hosted the Owl & Pussycat (five points) and managed a 4-3 win. Charlie Weaver, Guy Weaver and Jack Pope won for the Lion. Ronan Edge and Will Powell won for the visitors. The doubles were shared.

The Pheasant move to seven points after losing to the Angel (six points) 5-2. Jack Price, Jack Lewis, Jack Williams and Huw Humphreys won for the Angel. The doubles were shared.

The Red Lion Misfits (six points) lost out in a local derby to the Black Lion (eight points) 4-3, with Iestyn Pryce and Dan Morgan winning and both doubles going to the Black Lion.
