Welshpool’s stunning cameo in new Ryan Reynolds blockbuster

Hollywood’s Ryan Reynolds loves Wales, and it looks like he may have taken a liking to Welshpool too!

The Wrexham owner, who bought the club with fellow actor Rob McElhenney, has made a prominent nod towards his adopted homeland, and particularly Welshpool, in his new film Deadpool & Wolverine, which looks set to be the box office film of the year.

We haven’t seen the movie yet, but speaking on BBC Radio Wales yesterday (Friday) afternoon, film critic Gareth Slaymaker said “look out for a stunning cameo” before revealing that one of the characters in the film is called Welshpool.

The character appears with three Welsh dragon flags on his uniform, with the tabloids speculating that none other than Wrexham striker Paul Mullin plays the part!

Mr Slaymaker didn’t give it away and just told listeners: “You will have to watch the credits!”

Deadpool & Wolverine, a sequel to the 2016 and 2018 Deadpool films, features Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and opened on Thursday evening.

The star-studded cast includes Matthew McConaughey, who plays Cowboypool and Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, as Ladypool, a female variant of Deadpool.

But it’s the introduction of Welshpool that has got the tongues wagging with film review site Screenrant publishing ahead of the release: “Among the army of Deadpool variants in the finale of Deadpool & Wolverine is Welshpool. The character looks the same as most other Deadpool variants, only with a giant Welsh flag painted across his chest.”
