Council ends bid to host Farmers Market

The return of a Farmers Market to Welshpool has been binned, after councillors failed to gain enough support to make it happen.

The idea was first floated at the turn of the year, but after several attempts to ignite some enthusiasm amongst the farming community, it has taken off the agenda by the Town Council’s Events and Planning Committee.

Mayor, Cllr Bill Rowell, said at this week’s meeting: “I just think there is nowhere left for us to go with this at the moment, and if there was a strong pressure from the community to hold it (in future) then it is something we should consider, but I don’t think we can do it and then invite farmers to come in so at the moment it’s on the backburner.

“Should we be aware of a real demand from the farmers we can go back to it.”

Cllr Nick Howells has been sceptical from day one following previous experiences and said: “It’s a great idea but it is a tried and failed initiative in the town. We have done it before and it folded within months. I don’t really think it would be a successful town council initiative.

A proposal to drop the idea was backed by councillors.
