Volunteers praised following Hub ‘medical emergency’

Volunteers have been praised following a worrying medical emergency at The Welshpool Hub last Thursday.

The facility was featured last month in a MyWelshpoolTV video news report  which highlighted how popular it had become at the Town Hall for bringing people together twice a week.

But Cllr Nick Howells, who leads the Hub’s operations, revealed last night at a Town Council meeting that there had been a serious medical emergency.

“I would like to highlight that for the first time in three-and-a-half years last Thursday we had our first medical emergency,” explained Cllr Howells.

“One of our regular visitors who is severely disabled had an episode and collapsed, and the volunteers who are first aid trained that attended to the lady with her carer did a fantastic job and I was absolutely proud of the way they handled it.

“There was a first responder there within 12 minutes who called an ambulance again which was there within 15 minutes.”

Cllr Howells said he had tried to obtain an update on the condition of the person taken ill, but had yet to receive a response.

It was also reported last night that 536 people had attended The Hub in March with a total of 286 meals served.

The facility is financed through donations and March brought in £537.73 in voluntary contributions from sessions, along with a £200 donation from a local organisation.
