Rising demand sees hundreds of Newtown families supported by charity

The Salvation Army in Newtown says it has seen an increase in demand for support from local families, with hundreds of households relying on food, toys and baby essentials over the past year.

New figures from the charity show that in the lead up to Christmas, 446 children received toy vouchers for use in local shops, while 234 households were supported with Christmas food vouchers. A further 12 families with young children were provided with baby bundles containing essential items such as clothing, Moses baskets and toiletries for both mother and baby.

The support was made possible through donations and food drives organised by local people, workplaces and community organisations across Newtown.

Samantha Jones, who leads The Salvation Army Church in Newtown, said the level of community support had been vital in responding to growing need.

“As a Christian church and charity, whose motto is ‘Love God, Love others’, we’re grateful for the support we’ve received through workplaces, churches and other organisations who have helped us to support families when they’ve needed a hand up,” she said.

She also thanked volunteers and local groups, including the Outlaw Motorcycle Group and Newtown Rugby, for organising food collections and supporting the charity’s work throughout the year.

Demand for support has continued beyond the festive period. Over the past 12 months, The Salvation Army in Newtown has provided 648 households with three day emergency food parcels, underlining the ongoing pressure on local support services.

The Salvation Army says it will continue working with partners across the town to ensure help is available for individuals and families facing financial hardship.
