Parking concerns over proposed skatepark

22/02/2025 @ 09:40

Concerns have been raised that the new and long-awaited Welshpool skatepark will create parking problems at Maesydre.

The new designs (pictured) are with councillors, but no costs have been made public to replace the former facility that closed down five years ago for health and safety reasons.

The issue has been dragging its feet since, and little progress appears to have been made after it was discussed at the latest Strategy, Policy and Development Committee meeting, which we were unable to cover due to issues over the Zoom link.

The minutes state that “Cllr Morag Bailey raised concerns regarding car parking at the skatepark site, as it is currently used by parents/carers collecting and dropping off at the school and day nursery”.

The minutes go on to state that “Cllr Phil Pritchard shared his idea of installing a barrier system to charge people using the car park, suggesting a £2 fee for a day ticket. He explained that he had seen similar contact-less systems and thought it would be a great source of income for the Council”.

It was resolved that events-co-ordinator, Kimberly Wright, gather quotations to carry out a feasibility study on installing such barriers, but there was no hint mentioned of when we may see some progress on the new skatepark.

However, as far as MyWelshpool understands, the new skatepark was being planned for the car park in question and not on its former site, with planning permission required.
