Here’s how much it will cost to dump rubbish at the tip

Powys County Council has published the details of how much it will cost to dump our rubbish at Potters Household Waste Recycling Centre from April 1.

Residents have reacted with fury to the plans, which will also mean they will have to book a 10-minute slot online to drop off their rubbish.

Powys says it will save them £400,000 over the next couple of years, but residents and councillors say it will put people off and increase fly tipping.

The booking system has already been binned by Shropshire County Council after just three months after they conceded it wasn’t working.

While it will still be free to dump normal household rubbish, there will be charges to dump rubble & soil, plasterboard, wood & timber, uPVC window & door frames, window & door glass, bathroom & kitchen sanitary, insulation materials, roofing felt and plastic fixtures.

And here are the charges for each:

Rubble & soil:

One bag per visit free of charge that can be safely lifted by one person.

Thereafter:

£2.20 per bag (Typical retail sand/aggregate bag size, up to 25lt. The bag must be safely lifted by one person. A part-filled bag counts as one bag. Loose material will be charged at an estimated equivalent number of bags.)

£15.00 per small trailer (Trailer with bed length up to 1.4m, not requiring a CVT permit)

£30.00 per medium trailer (requiring a CVT permit) (Trailer with bed length between 1.4 m and 2.44m, requiring a CVT permit)

How Powys is explaining why it is needed:

“Despite some negative publicity in other local authority areas where booking systems have recently been introduced, feedback gathered in residents’ surveys confirm residents are very happy with the system once it has settled down,” said Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys.

“In fact, in a recent survey by a council in North Wales, 81% of residents ranked the new booking system as excellent, and 83% are in favour of keeping it in place.

“Change is always a challenge to begin with.  It will soon become second nature and remembering to pre-book a time slot will make your visit to the household recycling centre more efficient knowing that you have your own slot to recycle your waste with the help of the staff, if needed.”
