How is your community celebrating VE Day 80?

07/02/2025 @ 09:35

Powys County Council is inviting communities to apply for road closures, free of charge, to allow them to hold communal street parties in celebration of the VE Day 80th Anniversary.

VE Day marks the end of the war in Europe and WWII as a whole on May 8, with this year being the 80th anniversary. Communities are encouraged to enjoy a shared moment of celebration by coming together and commemorating this historical day at events held between Thursday, May 8 and Sunday, May 11.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “Applying for a closure for a street party would normally attract an administration fee but the council has once again decided to waive the fee to help communities celebrate this important anniversary.

“We would encourage everyone to come together and plan some fun street parties to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. These shared moments of celebration are great ways to keep the memories alive, pay homage to those involved in WWII and create strong and vibrant communities.”
