Welshpool Rotarians have been arranging with three local schools to plant purple crocus corms to raise awareness of the worldwide ‘End Polio Now’ initiative.

Guilsfield, Welshpool and Montgomery schools have planted the corms, while Welshpool Sign and Print have designed plaques for the areas, which incorporate the logo of the club.

“The help of Rotarians Jeff Davies and Con Price has been invaluable in the distribution and planting of the bulbs,” said a club spokesperson.

End Polio Now is an initiative enhanced by funds from the Bill Gates Foundation and it was hoped to eradicate polio worldwide. However recent climatic changes, volcanic events and wars which disrupted water and sanitation have resulted in new outbreaks.

Members were reminded that Polio is still a plane ride away from Britain, so Rotary UK promoting and educating, and said the enthusiastic support of the schools was much appreciated.

Meanwhile, the Presidents of Rotary Club of Welshpool and Welshpool Inner Wheel welcomed members past and present, family and friends to a joint lunch at the Royal Oak Hotel.

The lunch was a festive occasion in which to end 2024 and herald 2025, and was coordinated by Mrs Margaret Pepper who was thanked for her efforts by Welshpool Rotary Club President Mrs Wendy Beaven.
