Flat fire confirmed as Berriew Street incident

The fire service has confirmed that the incident on Berriew Street this morning is a property fire.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they received a call shortly after 9am after eye witnesses reported seeing flames coming from a flat above shop premises.

Crews from Welshpool, Montgomery, Newtown, Llanfair Caereinion and Llanfyllin were joined by fire fighters from Aberystwyth and Shropshire in responding to the incident.

The road remains closed and firefighters have been spotted entering the building wearing specialist breathing apparatus.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said: "Crews responded following reports of a fire within a house of multiple occupancy (HMO). This incident is currently ongoing, more information may be released when it is available. Residents are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes for journeys."

A police spokesperson added: "Emergency services are at Berriew Street, Welshpool, following reports of a fire at a property at around 9.15am today. The incident is currently ongoing and the road is closed and members of the public are asked to avoid the area."

Hafren Dyfrdwy have informed residents in the town centre via SMS that water pressure will remain low whilst fire services access the water hydrants.
