Welshpool increased their lead at the top of the Division 2 North table with a hard-fought win against title contenders, Colwyn Bay, on the 4G pitch at Parc Eirias, reports Gary Williams.
Falling behind mid-way through the first half, Pool kept up the pressure and with an interval score of 21-20 to the hosts, you knew this game was going to go to the wire. It did, but it was the visitors who gained the vital win with a 24-30 scoreline.
Tries were scored by Ryan Goodwin (pictured on his way to scoring), Saul Evans and Jason Isaac with Scott Masterman (three penalties, one conversion) and Rhys Pain (one conversion) adding the extras for an excellent start to 2025 for the Maesydre men.
Elsewhere in the Division, troubled Newtown, after gaining an early lead, fell away at bottom placed Caernarfon 2nds to suffer a surprising 28-15 defeat.
Machynlleth were disappointingly unable to raise a side to travel to Rhyl and will likely suffer a two-point deduction. After their recent good run of form, Mach will be very unhappy about having to call this game off. I suspect they will be back to full strength for next Saturday when they take on Welshpool at home.
In Division One North, COBRA enjoyed a hard-fought 22-8 win at home against a Mold side who made them fight for every point. Scores were level at half time but two tries midway through the second period were enough to move the Meifod team comfortably into mid table.
COBRA's 2nd team were involved in a try extravaganza in Division 3 North as they overcame Ruthin 2nds to win 44-19 and keep alive their slim title hopes. Leaders Llanidloes were thwarted by the weather as their game at Denbigh 2nds was called off.
