Changes to recycling come into place

07/07/2015 @ 10:07

Residents dropping off rubbish at recycling centres in Welshpool and Newtown could be asked to provide proof of residency under new rules introduced this week.

Potters has been awarded the new contract to operate household waste recycling centres in the towns, prompting a couple of tweaks that residents need to be aware of.

Also from now on, residents dropping off mixed waste will be asked to sort on site before putting into various containers.

Councillor John Powell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, explained: “We are delighted that the new contracts are now in place and the sites have been taken over. We would like to encourage residents to bring their waste for recycling. Residents are being asked to sort any mixed waste to maximise the recycling at the site as this is essential if we are to meet our statutory recycling targets set by Welsh Government and avoid any fines.”

The council explained that as the sites are funded and paid for by Powys tax payers, it should only be used by them and have introduced the ‘proof of residence’ to put off potential outsiders abusing the service.

Opening hours for the recycling centres:
Weekdays: 9am-5pm
Saturdays: 9am-5pm
Sundays & bank holidays: 10pm-4pm
