The former Leader of the Conservative Party, William Hague, is to become our newest resident.

Mr Hague, who stands down at the next general election in May following 26 years as an MP, has purchased the 10-bedroom Cyfronydd Hall which is just off the main road to Llanfair Caereinion.

It is believed he is going to dedicate more time to writing, with his wife Ffion surely playing a major part in the decision as her family’s roots are in Montgomeryshire.

Local Conservative MP Glyn Davies has welcomed his new neighbour.

“I’m really pleased that William and Ffion have decided to set up their family home in Montgomeryshire,” he said. “Ffion's father was a Montgomeryshire man so she has family roots here, and William is hugely popular throughout Wales. At a personal level, both William and Ffion are good friends of mine, and over future years they will become good friends of Montgomeryshire.

“Cyfronydd Hall is close to where I live, and is well known as a local landmark near Welshpool. I remember it as Girls School, which I passed every day en-route to Ysgol Uwchradd Caereinion.

“Over recent years Cyfronydd Hall has been beautifully restored, and it's great news for the area that it is now the family home of William and Ffion Hague, two people whom I expect to become acclaimed authors. I believe they will feel very much at home in our beautiful old county.”

Cyfronydd Hall was listed for sale at a price of £2.5m last year, but it is not known what Mr Hague has paid for the property.

In July last year, Mr Hague stood down as Foreign Secretary to become Leader of the House of Commons in preparation for his planned retirement from parliament in May.
