Dental chain set to open Welshpool practice
Imperial Dental Group Limited has applied for change of use for 27 Broad Street to change it from retail to a dentists, with a decision expected to be made by Powys County council as soon as September 10.
The business said it will create 10 new full-time jobs and “will offer NHS treatment in this predominantly rural area on the borderlands of Montgomeryshire”.
Welshpool is desperate for a new dental practice after myDentist announced it was ending its NHS offering and going fully private earlier this year.
Residents have been complaining for the past couple of years about the difficulty of getting appointments with many travelling to Shrewsbury or Oswestry for treatment.
The building is Grade II listed and has been empty, apart from pop up charity shops, for several years.
The proposal is for the practice to take up the bottom two floors of the building, and to operate from Monday-Friday (8am-6pm) and Saturday (8am-1pm).
Imperial Dental Group Limited is also in the process of applying for a new practice in Newtown on the first floor of the Dominos Pizza building on New Road.
The group operates 19 practices across the UK, including one in Llandrindod Wells, and has been in business for nearly 40 years.
In its application it pledges to provide both NHS and private dental treatments for adults and children in the Welshpool area.
However, the development would see the loss of another retail space which the Town Council has vowed to stop in the town centre after opposing plans for a new 24/7 gymnasium to replace Poundland.
But the desperate need for dentists in the town could sway their decision this time.

“The proposal seeks to deliver a sensitively adapted building that is both patient-centric and functional, to enable the residents of Welshpool and the surrounding area to readily access and navigate an essential new dental provision.
“As of June 2026, if a person is not registered with a dentist in Wales they must join a waiting list with Powys Dental Access. Places are allocated as they become available which may be many months.
“Notably, the new practice will not only address the shortage of NHS capacity but create new jobs locally.
“The transformation of a vacant period building to a sustainable dental practice is within the scope of the building and will offer NHS treatment in this predominantly rural area on the borderlands of Montgomeryshire. This new community resource will bring public satisfaction and contribute to the economy and vitality of the town centre.”
