Welshpool’s fast food hub’s litter, parking problems

Fears that the newly-created fast food hub on the outskirts of Welshpool would create a litter and parking nightmare are being realised, a Welshpool county councillor has confirmed.

KFC this month joined Starbucks and McDonald’s in opening at the controversial Buttington Roundabout development, with Costa Coffee set to open in the new year too.

But warnings were issued from several quarters, including Welshpool Town Council about the potential for litter problems and last night Cllr Richard Church told the town council’s monthly meeting that it was already an issue.

He said: “There have been some complaints about litter associated with the fast food outlets at Buttington Roundabout on the canal towpath.

“It is an issue that I have taken up with the county council’s refuse people and they are liaising with the operators of the new facilities out there to ensure there are adequate litter bins and collections taking place, particularly along the canal tow path.

“There are requirements for them to provide adequate litter bin facilities and from what I hear they are cooperative to help with the disposal of litter, but it is an inevitable result of having outlets like that in that location.”

KFC opened this month with great fanfare, claiming that they would be carrying out regular litter picks to keep the area clean.

But Cllr Jackson Quarréll highlighted another issue after being contacted by dog walkers who complained that they could no longer park at the site next to the canal.

“They’ve headed to the same area to park up and walk their dogs down the canal and have been informed that parking is only available to people frequenting the fast food restaurants,” he said.

Town Clerk, Richard Williams, said that the Town Council was also dealing with concerns raised directly with them and added that the Planning Committee would be discussing it in January.
