The head teachers at two of our local schools that could lose their sixth forms under radical Powys County Council plans have praised their pupils following “exceptional” results.
Ysgol Llanfyllin and Welshpool High School could lose their sixth forms in future under the plans that would mean pupils studying at a Newtown hub instead.
But today’s strong set of results at both schools have been praised by their head teachers who are campaigning hard to save the sixth forms.
“These results show the value of preserving sixth forms in Powys and the strength of collaborative working with our ‘Trisgol’ partner schools, enabling North Powys students to succeed in their own communities,” said Dewi Owen, Headteacher at Ysgol Llanfyllin.
He said that his school’s “exceptional A-Level and vocational results” mean that he can predict that “every single one of our students has secured a place at their chosen university or destination, across all disciplines and specialisms including the Arts, Literature & Languages, Humanities, Maths, Sciences, Engineering, Construction and Technology, Sports, Healthcare and Public Services”.
Meanwhile, Jon Arnold, Headteacher at Welshpool High School described his school’s results as “another strong set”.
“These results reflect the enormous hard work and commitment of our students. It is a pleasure to see them collecting their results today, and to appreciate the amazing young adults they have become during their time at school,” he said.
