The Welshpool area is facing an increase in fly tipping as a result of the controversial changes in using the town’s recycling centre, it has been claimed.
Welshpool’s self-titled clean-up minion, Kelly Meredith, believes the new system of having to book access slots online and the introduction of charges for some DIY has made her job of cleaning up the town a lot tougher.
Kelly, who is also running for the vacant Town Council seat next month, has logged a large number of pictures showing sites across the town where rubbish is dumped.
In her post she wrote tongue-in-cheek last night: “The Booking System seems to be working really well!”
Before adding: “Multiple fly tips in Welshpool, with six more found just today.”
Powys County Council introduced the changes across the county earlier in April into save £400,000 over the next two years.
Welshpool Town Council is also lobbying for it to be binned, with a meeting with Powys County Council expected soon. Shropshire County Council reversed their decision earlier this year after reporting an increase in fly tipping.
Whilst the system seems to be working well for users, it has put a lot of people off and Powys County Council said that it will review the situation later in the year.
