A Christmas wrap from Steve Lloyd as darts season heads towards the second half
We are well into the season now, and, as it is the Christmas break, here are a few lines from the committee.
First of all, a big thank you to all of the sponsors helping to make the league run smoothly. Too many to list but if you look at the fixture sheet you will see a majority of them. Please mention where you saw them if you pay them a visit as it will help in the future.
This year has seen an explosion in teams with a lot of younger players and to this end we have held a first competition for the under 25s.
A great success with 25 entries played on the same evening as the GWS Contractors competition. This idea was thought out by Jordan Harding and supported by the committee to its successful conclusion last week. Well done to Cameron Williams (winner) and Bobby Gough (runner up).
Also, a first this year, after a break of over 60 years, Molto’s was used as a venue for the GWS Contractors competition. It was used as a venue for the Bagshaw Cup finals in the early 1960s as the Cup was given to the league by the then owner of the Pola Cinema, Mr Bagshaw in the 1950s.
Well done to Huw Humphries and his team including Chris Proctor and Rhys Roberts for all the hard work put in. Well done to Jordan Harding for winning the competition and Cameron Williams, the runner-up. Also thanks to Gareth Steadman for the sponsorship.
Now for the part where we assess the new teams and some older ones.
Division One is almost at the halfway stage sees a three-horse race between the Kings Head A, Green Dragon A and the Compass with only five points separating them.
At the bottom it is even closer with only seven points separating sixth placed Punchbowl to the Grapes A in tenth.
Division Two is far more exciting with last year’s bottom team, Castle A, now heading the division with 35 points. What a turn around.
The Pheasant are also on 35 points with a young player, Bobby Gough, who reached the final of the under 25s performing well.
The Kings Head B are only one point behind on 34, also with a blend of young and experienced players. The Owl & Pussycat are on 33 points in fourth but have recently been bolstered by the arrival of Matt Knight from the Green Dragon C.
Joe Jones and Jacob Schofield, runners-up in the league doubles, are also playing well. The Black Lion Llanfair are fifth with 27 points with another young man to watch, Dan Morgan, who reached the semi-final of the under 25s and quarter-final of the GWS Contractors competition. Someone to look out for.
Only three points separate fifth to eighth place with the Black Lion, Powis Arms, Grapes B and the Angel while the Red Lion Misfits and the Lion Caerhowel are a few points behind. What a great start and I hope the finish is as exciting.
Steve Lloyd, on behalf of the committee.
