In the second jobs blow within a week for Welshpool, an international company has confirmed the closure of its Welshpool operation, with 40 jobs estimated to be lost.

BSW Group said it has made the decision following “a comprehensive review of its operations across all functions and business lines”, resulting in the closure of its Welshpool branch.

It comes a week after Invertek Drives said it was releasing 15 employees due to the rising costs of National Insurance and the minimum wage.

This morning the BSW Group told us in a statement: “Following a comprehensive review of its operations across all functions and business lines, BSW Group has confirmed that it is ceasing operations at BSW Timber Solutions in Welshpool.

“The business has made the decision with a view to better meet the demands of customers, improve profitability and strengthen its position in a challenging marketplace.

“Manufacturing operations will be moving to the BSW Timber Solutions site in Melton, while sales operations will be moving to BSW Timber’s well-established customer service centre based in Carlisle.

“BSW Group would like to thank all employees affected for their hard work and dedication, especially during this difficult period, and we wish everyone the very best for the future.”

Founded in 1848, in Earlston, Scotland, BSW Timber is now the largest sawmilling company in the UK.

Prior to Welshpool’s announcement, it had 11 manufacturing sites across the UK and Latvia, and is a large-scale producer of certified timber products for various industries and applications, including fencing, landscaping, decking, cladding, construction, joinery and pallet production.

The company only took over the Welshpool operation in December 2020 after buying out SCA Wood UK on the Severn Farm Industrial Estate.
