Getting back to its former glory

Welshpool’s Mayor believes that Sunday’s carnival has put the annual event back on track towards its former glory after a well-supported event.

Feedback to the carnival, which has been ridiculed in recent years after comparing it to its hey-days, has been very positive and bodes well for the future, according to Cllr Nick Howells who led the parade in a glorious classic car.

“I felt it was a huge success, great to see Welshpool bouncing back and buzzing following the Covid pandemic,” he said.

“It was a much-improved parade with great floats, walking entries, and a procession of very impressive vintage cars, accompanied by the marching band. The crowds were amazing.”

Crowds moved on from the town centre to Maesydre for an afternoon of fun that stretched into the evening, thanks to the glorious weather.

“A huge thanks to all the Welshpool Town Council staff, volunteers and other Councillors who attended as stewards, and all those who worked hard to participate and make the event the success that it was, with particular mention to Cllr Carol Robinson, Chair of the Events and Tourism Committee, who worked tirelessly and put in all the legwork to promote and organise the event,” Cllr Howells added.

“Thanks also to the great line-up of entertainment including Porth Y Waen Silver band, Sally Gartell and the Academy of Dance, the Midwinter Academy of Performing Arts, Welshpool Church in Wales and Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng, for their musical contributions.

“I hope that I haven’t left anyone out. I have to mention our impromptu sound engineer and DJ, Kim (Wright) from the office who was ‘thrown in at the deep end’.

“I received several comments about the excellent food and value for money provided by the concessions with a great range of food and beverages.

“It was also great to have the Bowling Club open, our very own ‘on site’ beer tent.

“Finally, my heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful people from Welshpool and the surrounding area who came and supported the event. A great day out for one and all. Nice one Welshpool, Onwards and Upwards.”
