Snap Fitness claims it would invest over £1million in Welshpool

As Powys planners are set to decided whether to allow the current Poundland building to be converted into a 24-hour gymnasium later this month, the company behind the bid has made an audacious claim that it will invest over £1million in its Welshpool operation.

We revealed last month that the huge retail space on Berriew Street was the subject of a change-of-use application so that national chain Snap 24/7 Fitness can take it on.

But it drew huge criticism from the town, with up to six gyms already in operation including one across the road at the former Pola Cinema building.

Welshpool Town Council also strongly objects to the application which has been ‘called-in’ by local county councillors to be decided by a committee and not an individual council officer. The Town Council said it objects to any loss of retail space in the town centre.

But last night we spoke with the company behind the bid who said that they welcome the “open dialogue” over the application and claimed the facility would bring “substantial private investment, local employment and an excellent new community facility”.

Snap 24/7 Fitness has already bid to take on two former Poundland buildings in other part of the UK, with the retailer falling into financial difficulty in recent years.

Here’s what the Snap 24/7 Fitness spokesperson told us last night:

“We recognise the community’s disappointment at the potential loss of Poundland and understand the desire to retain retail uses within the town centre.

“High streets and town centres matter enormously to the communities they serve and we recognise that any proposed change deserves consideration and open dialogue.

“The premises were marketed to the retail sector but attracted no meaningful interest from other large-format retailers. Snap Fitness’ application therefore offers a positive opportunity to secure the unit’s long-term occupation, broaden the town centre’s offering and generate regular activity and footfall throughout the day.
“Snap Fitness is an exciting and growing international brand. The Welshpool gym would be independently owned and operated and would see investment of more than £1 million in the town. This proposal brings substantial private investment, local employment and an excellent new community facility offering Reformer Pilates, fitness classes, strength equipment, recovery areas and infrared saunas.

“If the application is approved, we will actively look to partner with local businesses and sports teams, creating reciprocal relationships that benefit both our members and their customers.

“Across the UK, our clubs regularly support local fundraising initiatives, sponsor grassroots sport and create partnerships that encourage people to engage with other businesses in their town. We would be committed to bringing that same community-first approach to Welshpool.
