Current Member of the Senedd, Russell George’s late bombshell that he is standing for the Senedd elections on May 7 has ensured that you have the choice of nine parties/independents to choose from next month.
We go to the polls across Wales for a new-look election that sees us vote for parties instead of actual candidates (apart from the independents running), with six people to represent us in the massively expanded constituency of Gwynedd Maldwyn.
It is also the first election where 16 and 17-year-olds have the chance to vote and MyTown Media will ensure you are kept up to date with our MyVote Matters campaign.
How it will work:
Wales is divided into 16 constituencies at the election on May 7, and each constituency will elect six Members of the Senedd using a closed-list proportional voting system. You will get one ballot paper and can vote for either a political party or an individual candidate.
This voting system means that the number of seats a party wins in a constituency will roughly match its share of the vote. For example, if a party gets 50% of the vote, they’ll win three out of the six seats available.
In each constituency, political parties were allowed to name up to eight candidates to stand in the election. Individual candidates can also stand as independents.
In total, 675 candidates have put themselves forward for election for the 96 seats available in the next Senedd.
These candidates represent 16 political parties, while 30 people are standing as independents.
