Town Hall indoor market now full

It appears that some Town Hall market traders are at odds with Welshpool Town Council over its plans to expand floorspace to attract more traders.

At the latest Operations & Development Committee meeting, it was revealed that the indoor market is now at full capacity, but the local authority’s plan to clear the middle area to allow more trading space has not been welcomed by some.

Cllr Nick Howells told fellow councillors following Town Clerk, Richard Williams’s update from a recent meeting with traders that: “The bit about the middle of the market being cleared out to allow for a few pop-up stalls is not going down well at all with the present market traders. I am told it was not discussed with them and is just being done and they are not happy.”

But Mr Williams defended the move, saying it needed to be done. “I don’t think that is true at all,” he replied to Cllr Howells.

“I think you are getting information from them that is very much one sided. I am happy to discuss in private session so we can flesh that out but that is not the situation at all.

“The middle of the market has always been for market stalls and because we haven’t had the number over the last few years it has become a seating area, not for the public but for the traders themselves.

“However, we are at the need to put additional stalls in to meet demand. It is a market hall for market stalls and now that we have the demand it makes perfect sense to put stalls in the middle.

“However, it has faced some hostility. We need to make decisions as the market authority and councillors made the decision that they want to see more stalls so we have to follow that instruction.”

Cllr Howells clarified that “I am just passing on what was told to me”.
